Every year, the Lake Trust Foundation, in partnership with 天美麻豆, awards one student up to four years of full tuition at Cleary.

In September 2025, Morgan Murphy was the recipient of the Michigan Impact Scholarship. She began her studies at Cleary in fall 2025, with plans to complete a bachelor degree in business communications.

淭his scholarship is more than a means to complete my education, she reports after hearing she received the award. 淚t has generational value and worth to me. It ensures I can get my full education at an esteemed university and opportunities for my college experience that my parents didn檛 have.

In its award letter to Murphy, Lake Trust Foundation leaders wrote: 測ou have displayed unparalleled drive and commitment toward your education and growing the Michigan economy 

淚 know with my strengths and education from Cleary, thanks to the Lake Trust scholarship I will thrive and prosper in the career I choose, Murphy finds.

Now that her first year at Cleary is close to completion, Murphy reflects on it: 淚t always going to start off as an adjustment, but I am adjusting well, she reports. Murphy is a member of Cleary student government, she is president of Cleary Black Student Union, and she is a member of NAACP Lansing youth chapter.

淚 definitely would recommend Cleary to others who have a strong interest in business and want a career in business.

The Lake Trust Foundation, focused on building and sustaining stronger communities, awards five scholarships a year: New Beginnings (four awarded) and Michigan Impact (one awarded to an incoming Cleary student). The purpose of these scholarships is to support the growth of the Michigan economy by expanding access to educational opportunities through financial support to individuals interested in pursuing an education in high-demand fields and joining Michigan workforce.

The Michigan Impact Scholarship provides a full-tuition award to one Michigan resident beginning an undergraduate or postgraduate degree at 天美麻豆, online or on campus.

Applications for the Michigan Impact and New Beginnings scholarships are being accepted now through Sunday, April 12.

Great Start Livingston, in partnership with the Arthur Secunda Museum at 天美麻豆, welcomed 265 people for Little Artists Night at the Museum, a free, hands-on play and learn STEAM event for babies, toddlers and preschoolers to explore the world of art. The event took place Thursday, March 26 at the museum, located on 天美麻豆 campus in Howell.

Through interactive activities, inspired by internationally renowned artist Arthur Secunda, parents observed how art helps build a child language, creativity and confidence; while more than 150 kids finger-painted, drew pictures, made Arthur Secunda-inspired collages, and ink-rolled art designs.

Families moved from station to station at their own pace, exploring art in different ways, including torn paper collage-making, finger-painting, ink mark-making, drawing and coloring. A gross motor play area welcomed kids to jump, crawl and run while exploring colorful tiles, obstacle courses and balance steps. A harpist provided music, pizza was served, and every child received a new book, compliments of Livingston Great Start.

淟ittle Artists’ Night grew out of a wonderful connection with Suzanne Fischer, curator at the Arthur Secunda Museum, reports Robin Schultz, coordinator at Livingston Great Start. 淲hen we started talking about ways to bring families with young children into that space, it just made perfect sense. We knew it would be an amazing venue for one of our family events connecting families with the community and local resources. And what a night we had! So many families told us how much their children enjoyed the event and how much fun they had with their kids.

淎rt is a perfect vehicle to support children development, Schultz adds. 淭earing paper, finger painting, and making ink mark designs on paper all looks like play, and it is; but these activities are building the very skills and experiences that help little ones grow. Through this experience, we hope families will feel more connected to their child’s development and to each other.

淲e especially are grateful to 天美麻豆 for welcoming our families and hosting us at the Arthur Secunda Museum. This is what Great Start Livingston is all about connecting families, schools, and our community with the focus on preparing children for kindergarten and beyond, Schultz adds.

The night was 渋ncredible, describes Suzanne Fischer, curator of the Arthur Secunda Museum.

淲e set up four different art-making activities two that were related to the museum art and we had a scavenger hunt for the kids to find colors or shapes from Arthur artwork. It was a fantastic night of fun and creativity that everyone seemed to enjoy. We especially were happy to see how many parents walked through the museum and expressed interest in returning for a guided tour.

淢y 1 陆 year-old daughter had a lot of fun, says Erin Neimi of Brighton. 淚 liked that the museum provided art activities she could do.

Brittany Desentz of Howell brought her Irish twins ages 3 and 4 so they could interact with other kids. 淭hey had a great time and really enjoyed the gross motor play area. I couldn檛 get them to leave!

Emily Svacha 3-year-old son tried new art techniques he hadn檛 seen before. 淚 didn檛 know about the museum, and we definitely will be back, the Brighton resident notes.

淚t was fun to see the kids looking at Arthur art through their young, innocent eyes, Fischer points out. 淭hey described what they saw in new, and very creative, ways and that is exactly what Arthur wanted.

Help Me Grow Livingston, Howell Carnegie Library, Help Me Grow and the Arthur Secunda Museum at 天美麻豆 partnered to provide this free event, which was funded through Livingston County United Way and GM to support STEAM skills.

For those who were not able to attend Little Artists Night, Cleary will host free family days at the Arthur Secunda Museum on Sunday, April 12 and Sunday, May 10 from 1 pm to 4 pm.

Secunda Second Sundays are a day for families to tour the museum, explore Secundaenriching art and create a hands-on-project all at no cost. A museum docent will provide a short tour of Secunda 350+ art pieces, the largest collection of his art in one location. Following the tour, kids can create their own art project. If you are interested in attending, send an email to sfischer@cleary.edu.

In addition to Secunda Second Sundays, the museum staff hosts guided and unguided tours. Museum unguided tour hours are Monday through Friday from 10 am to 5 pm. If you have a small group interested in a guided tour, send an email to sfischer@cleary.edu to arrange a time.

Throughout the year, 天美麻豆 hosts the 淎rthur Secunda Immersive Experience, for local high school students, a two-day free hands-on art experience. Last year, more than 100 art students from Brighton, Fowlerville, Hartland, Howell and Pinckney explored the intricacies of watercolor painting, linocut etching and printing, new techniques in collage creation, and other art mediums used by Secunda. A large portion of the two days was dedicated to students creating their own original piece of artwork inspired by Secunda.

Thanks to grant funding from the Michigan Arts and Culture Council, the Community Foundation of Livingston County and the Community Foundation of southeast Michigan, Cleary is able to provide these workshops free of charge to high school students in grades 9 to 12. The two days include a guided tour of the Arthur Secunda Museum, hands on demonstrations and education on different artistic techniques, and opportunities for students to try new art mediums and create their own artwork inspired by Secunda. Lunch, snacks and a free art supply kit are included in the workshop. To learn more about the Arthur Secunda Immersive Experience for high school students, send an email to brogers@cleary.edu.

Eleven years ago, Angela MacDonald was happy and fulfilled in her Talent Growth + Performance Manager role at Lake Trust Credit Union, while raising her daughter with her husband in South Lyon. Going back to school for her MBA wasn檛 even on her radar until a representative from 天美麻豆 showed up at her workplace. Lake Trust had partnered with the school to launch an inaugural MBA Cohort.

淭he Cleary rep asked me a few questions that got me thinking about my career and my future:

榃hat can Cleary do to make your learning experience one that will fit you?

榃hat can we do to make school workable for you?

楬ow can we tailor our program to fit your needs?

淲hat school does that, I thought, and that when I decided to take a closer look at Cleary.

MacDonald was one of 14 Lake Trust team members selected to complete their MBAs together.听

She admits she was worried about balancing school, work and family. She didn檛 want to sacrifice any of these. Her daughter was only 4, and she had a lot of responsibilities as a manager with the credit union, but her husband encouraged her to give it a go. 淗e said to me, 榦ur daughter will see what hard work means, and it will make her a better person, and he was right. Today, she is a hard worker and a high achiever.

Within two years, MacDonald completed an MBA in Integrated Management at Cleary. 淭he professors made learning fun, she finds. Even though it was hard to go back to school after a 12-year absence, MacDonald worked alongside her cohort to earn her degree. 淭hey all were high achievers, and we kept each other motivated, she notes.

Today, 11 years after earning her MBA, MacDonald has taken on even more responsibilities: she is AVP of Talent Growth & Performance for Lake Trust Credit Union and serves as President of the Cleary Alumni Association.

淐leary is my extended family, she announces. 淲hen I was a student, everyone seemed to know me by name, I was greeted with hugs and warm welcomes, and I really felt the university was a perfect fit for me. I wouldn檛 expect this at other colleges. It was such a personalized experience.

淚 admit it wasn檛 easy. I worked all day, had dinner with my family and then hit the books.

In looking at her career goals, MacDonald is quick to say, 淐leary has helped me to be more strategic in my thinking. My business acumen has deepened, and I am making more impactful business decisions aligned to our strategic business plan.

When asked if she would recommend Cleary to other moms in a similar situation, MacDonald says, 淐leary is willing to work with you to help you reach your goals. During my studies, my advisor asked me how the hybrid academic model was working for me I was taking some classes online and some on campus. She would help me adjust my schedule to make sure I was successful.

As a member of Cleary alumni board for three terms and now president since January 2024, MacDonald is amazed at how much the university has grown and flourished in such a short time. 淭he athletics program is expanding, the school has added six new major concentrations, and our rankings continue to soar!

淟ake Trust Credit Union is very proud to be a partner with Cleary, in fact, we offer an annual scholarship to one Cleary student who demonstrates drive and commitment toward education and growing the Michigan economy. Our credit union is dedicated to investing in our community and our students who will be our future leaders.

Lake Trust Foundation offers scholarship to Cleary

Max Ballinger, director of athletics, announced that Zach Wood accepted the head coaching position for men wrestling, effective March 9. Although this year season officially has ended, Wood already has met with every member of his team individually and is developing his game plan for the 2026/2027 season.

淶ach is a driven and passionate leader who understands what it takes to build a championship-caliber program, Ballinger finds. 淗is track record of successful recruiting and developing student athletes academically and competitively, as well as his strong community ties and partnerships, make him the right fit for our wrestlers, our athletic department, and Cleary.

Wood experience as a coach and a wrestler is impressive. Prior to joining Cleary, he served as head assistant wrestling coach for the women program at Siena Heights University. Before Siena Heights, Wood was assistant head coach for the men and women wrestling program at Albion College. During his two years at the school, he mentored 13 scholar All-Americans and coached nine national qualifiers. He was instrumental in recruiting 33 student athletes and helped guide both wrestling teams to NCAA Division III top 25 rankings.

Wood began his coaching career as a wrestling assistant at Clarkston High School. In 2018, he accepted the wrestling head coach position at Holly High School, where he led the team to four state championships, including the first female state champion in Holly history.

Outside his collegiate work, Wood is Business Manager for MI Revolution, a wrestling and pickleball facility in Highland. He coordinates training classes and programming for youth wrestling.

Wood roots run deep in Michigan. He was born and raised in Oxford, was part of the 2011 state champion wrestling team at Oxford High School, and continued his education at Lake Erie College where he earned a bachelor degree in Sports Studies while competing on the men wrestling team.听

Wood own wrestling career began when he was barely past toddler age. 淚 used to watch my two older brothers wrestle, and I wanted to be just like them, he reflects. He joined a competitive wrestling team the Pontiac Huskies when he was only 4 years old, and his passion for the sport only fueled his drive to pursue wrestling as a career. 淚 think I was wrestling at the same time I was developing my fine motor skills, he laughs. 淚t was part of me, and it will remain one of my greatest passions.

When he learned about the opportunity to lead the men wrestling program at Cleary, Wood knew it was the right move at the right time for him. 淚 had taken a part-time coaching position at Siena Heights so I could spend time with my newborn daughter, Wood says. 淔amily is #1 for me and always will be.

淐leary reputation academically and athletically was very impressive, and when meeting members of the athletic and academic departments, I knew this was the right fit for me, he asserts. 淚檝e been given an opportunity to work with a great group of young men, to build a strong wrestling culture, and have the support of the Cleary organization to help young athletes develop their talents in athletics and academics. Influencing young men at this stage of their lives is a tall order, and I檓 extremely grateful to Cleary for this opportunity.

Wood coaching style is based on building strong, sustaining relationships with his team and Cleary; establishing consistent structure; having hard conversations with wrestlers when they are needed; and instilling expectations athletically and academically.

淎s a team, we will focus on day-to-day work, doing the small things correctly, which ultimately will lead to positive results, he finds.

Wood lives in Albion with his 渞ock star fianc茅 (as he calls her), their 1-year-old daughter and his stepdaughter. 淔amily always will be number one in my life, but wrestling has a secure second spot, he shares with pride.

The Livingston Fine Arts Association (LFAA) will host a special artist demonstration and hands-on workshop featuring watermedia artist Lora Garcelon on Tuesday, March 31 at 7:00 p.m. at 天美麻豆, Commons Classroom 3.

Garcelon will demonstrate her unique mixed-media painting process, offering attendees an inside look at how she layers watercolor, gouache, acrylic and collage elements to create richly textured and expressive works of art. Participants will also have the opportunity to engage in a hands-on workshop exploring elements of her creative techniques.

Garcelon work invites viewers to look closely. Her paintings often reveal unexpected details such as textures, patterns, words and even musical notes embedded within the composition, reflecting her playful and experimental approach to art.

Originally from Columbus, Ohio, Garcelon discovered painting in high school before attending The Ohio State University, where she earned a degree in pharmacy in 1991. After several years working as a pharmacist and raising her family, she returned to her creative passion in 2005, studying painting privately with a focus on design and composition.

Today, Garcelon works primarily in water-based media including watercolor, gouache and acrylic, often incorporating collage and experimenting with acrylic marbling techniques. Her subjects are drawn from everyday life including family, pets and scenes from travel bringing a personal narrative and sense of discovery to each piece.

Garcelon is a signature member of the Michigan Watercolor Society, where she has earned multiple awards for her work. She is also a member of the Livingston Fine Arts Association, Brighton Art Guild, National Watercolor Society, and the International Society of Experimental Artists.

淢y goal is to create a work that exceeds my expectations and surprises the viewer, Garcelon says. 淚 love the unpredictability of watercolor paintings truly take on a life of their own.

Eddie Cargor never expected a softball injury would help him find his true passion: teaching. At that time, he was working as a corrections officer for the Michigan Department of Corrections and playing for the department softball team. During his downtime, he began substituting occasionally at a local middle school and found the profession rewarding. 淏ut I felt I would be better suited to teaching adult learners and college students, he notes, tucking this dream in the back of his mind for almost 30 years.

Dr. Cargor was born in an underserved neighborhood of Detroit, where crime and drugs were rampant. As he grew up with his mother and brother in a one-parent home, this was not the life his family wanted for him, so they focused on securing him a good education. 淢y grandmother lived in Alabama, so I went there for vacations, and to live and go to school from time to time, where I learned all about southern hospitality, he reports. 淚 ended up returning home and
graduating from Detroit Northern High School.

He continued his education at Eastern Michigan University, where he earned a bachelor degree in political science with a minor in personnel management.

淚nitially, I was gravitating toward law school and then a career in politics, he notes. After graduation, Dr. Cargor joined the United States Marine Corps Reserves, where he served for six years. 淚 was planning to go into military law but soon realized that was not the path for me. Around this time, he also started a small tax business: Smile While You File Tax Services, to earn additional income.

His next step was the Michigan Department of Corrections, where he started as a corrections officer and moved into personnel. 淭he State of Michigan offers many opportunities for career
growth, and I took advantage of those, he points out. After working as a labor relations specialist, Dr. Cargor was promoted to Human Resources Director for the Michigan Civil Service Commission where he retired after 30 years.

But he had more after-retirement plans. He relocated his tax business from his home into a private office, and while working with his clients on their tax returns, he saw the need to extend that help beyond tax liability and into financial planning for retirement. 淚 should be helping my clients find the best ways to save for retirement and keep as much money as they can, especially if they are on a fixed income, he notes. Dr. Cargor obtained security licenses to also serve his clients as a financial advisor, which he still does today.

淚 get to help people from all walks of life realize their dreams for financial security, he finds. 淚 truly enjoy helping my clients achieve their financial goals.

While moving from one career into the next, Dr. Cargor completed his master degree and his PhD. 淗ere I am, 22 years into my career, when I stepped onto the stage to receive my master, he recalls. The stage was crowded with MBAs, and he knew right at that time that a PhD was what he needed to distinguish himself. He received his Doctor of Management in Organizational Leadership shortly afterwards.

Dr. Cargor ambitions to continue serving others only became stronger. 淚 knew that the dash between birth and end of life was one I was going to fill with service to others, and that always was in the forefront of my mind, he says.

Reflecting on his substitute teaching days and the spark that ignited from that experience, he began teaching at a college level.

After a few years at ConcordiammUniversity in Ann Arbor, hemapplied to 天美麻豆, where he has served as an adjunct professor since August 2021. He first taught in-person classes in Howell but saw an opportunity to work with the Detroit Police Department in a hybrid role. He teaches graduate and undergraduate classes in his areas of expertise leadership, human resources, finance and economics. 淐leary looked at my skill sets and matched me with courses where I could share my diverse work experience, he points out. 淎 great deal of my lived experiences has positioned me to offer practical, real-world applications that will prepare students for leadership roles in business and public service.

A major factor in choosing Cleary to work was The Cleary Mind鈩, he emphasizes. 淚t aligns with my academic, professional and personal philosophy. I am honored to be part of the academic team at Cleary, he adds proudly. Dr. Cargor work never seems completed. 淚 am not effective when I am not busy, he says.

He also serves on four boards:
1. Phi-Eta-Psi Imperial Foundation: he was its founder, a national president of the fraternity, and now serves on the foundation board as the Board of Chair Emeritus

2. Wayne County Civil Service Commission Board

3. Board of Talent Development Coalition of Pontiac: working to help the underserved build skills in labor and trades

4. Board of Tapology in Flint

Dr. Cargor has been married for 32 years; he has two daughters and one son who are very good citizens, he wants to point out; and two grandchildren. He has lived in Ypsilanti for 50 years and has been a deacon at his church for 30 years. In his continuing journey to expand his dash between birth and end of life, he remains focused on being a good servant to his community by mentoring and helping those who are less fortunate.

Billy Simms, a junior and forward for the Cleary men hockey team looking to capture the #1 position in the WHAC, has plenty more to cheer about. His little sister, Kirsten, just won a gold medal in the Olympics! (The game against Canada for the gold went into overtime after the USA tied the score at 1 to 1 with two minutes left in the last period of regulation play. Megan Keller from Farmington Hills scored the gold medal-winning goal.)

At age 21, Kirsten is one of the youngest teammates on the USA women hockey team. Billy, along with his family, was able to see her step onto the ice in her first game as an Olympian and score the first goal!

淚 didn檛 realize how big this was until I saw her on the ice for the first time representing our country. It was such a cool moment for me. I was so proud of my sister, he announces.

Billy and Kirsten grew up in Plymouth and began playing hockey at preschool age. 淥ur dad watched a lot of hockey and asked us if we wanted to play, and that how it all started, Billy explains. 淲e both knew hockey was going to be our sport.

Kirsten played in some of Michigan top boys leagues until she was 14 when she switched over to women competitive hockey. Billy and his dad knew before then that she had the potential to be an Olympian. 淪he was always in the driveway shooting pucks or stick handling in the garage, Billy says. 淪he spent a lot of much time and effort to be a competitor.

Billy continued his hockey career in AAA travel and then onto the Juniors where he broke his leg and expected his hockey career to be over until he met Wes Smith, a Cleary hockey star (and recent graduate) who was coaching skill training clinics alongside Billy. He invited Billy to skate with the Cleary team. 淚 liked the coaches and the team and wanted my degree. It all fit together, he observed.

Billy has one more year at Cleary before he earns his degree in Project Management. He hopes to get into the field of finance and wealth management, and continue to play a little hockey on the side for recreation.

In the meantime, his sister is celebrating gold medal honors with her team in Milan, Italy, and already has hopes to compete in the 2030 Olympics and get drafted into the US women professional hockey league after she graduates from the University of Wisconsin, where she plays for a nationally ranked women hockey team. The university has won two out of the last three national championships and is hoping to capture its third this year.

淲e were fortunate to grow up in Michigan where hockey programs and training are strong, Billy finds. 淭here is a lot of good hockey, good coaches and plenty of opportunities right here in Michigan and Livingston County.

Kirsten is one of only two Michiganders on the USA women hockey team.

When he had an opportunity to talk with her at the Olympics, he told her, 淓njoy the moment and have fun!

Kirsten worked hard to earn her spot on the USA team. She competed in the 10U and 12U Compuware Tier 1 boys league, one of the toughest leagues in the state. From there, she joined the 16U and the 19U Little Caesars league, another top competitor, where her team was runner up in the national championships (16U) and national champions in 2022 for the 19U team. Kirsten represented Team USA in the Women World Championships in 2020 (gold medal), 2022 (silver medal), 2023, 2024 (silver medal) and 2025 (gold medal).

As a player for the University of Wisconsin women hockey team, she scored the game-tying and game-winning goals in the national championship game (2024/25 season), and she scored the game-winning goal in the national championship game in the 2022/23 season.

Now, she can add a gold medal winner to her impressive resume.
