Did you know that 天美麻豆 is home to the largest public display of art in Livingston County – The Arthur Secunda Museum?听

Arthur Secunda was an internationally renowned artist whose art career began in Detroit in the 1940s. He was known for his brilliant collages, striking graphics and iconic landscapes of the late 1970s and 1980s, which incorporate a specific kind of color gradation and blending of forms.

Sadly, Arthur Secunda passed away in August. He leaves a legacy of more than eight decades of fine art, all beautifully displayed here on the Cleary campus in Howell. In his memory and as a way to re-introduce the community to the wonderful resource we have in our own backyard, Cleary is hoping to recruit a group of volunteers to serve as docents to the museum.听

Volunteers will attend a special training session with Arthur’s son, David, this fall.

“Our goal is to have members of our community, staff and students trained docents who will conduct tours of the museum when groups and individuals request tours, says Brett Rogers, director of Marketing at Cleary.

You do not need an art background to conduct tours.听Docents would be asked to conduct four to six tours a year on a rotational basis.

The training will consist of an afternoon zoom discussion with Arthur son, David Secunda. He will teach about his father, the techniques he used, and which pieces to highlight during the tour. Lunch will be provided to those interested in completing the training session. Upon completion of the session, a script will be written, and a few mock tours will be scheduled with the docents so they may practice and perfect their tour presentation.

Date and time for the training session will be subject to volunteers availability and will most likely be scheduled in early December.

If you are interested in learning more about volunteer opportunities for the Arthur Secunda Museum, please submit an online application at: /volunteer-at-the-secunda-museum.

International student, Jaque Valota, is captain of the 天美麻豆 soccer team, she works as a marketing intern at the university, she single handedly organized and hosted the first ever 減rom night at the school, and she looks to her future with confidence and certainty for success.

She will graduate in December with her bachelor degree and plans to continue her studies and obtain a master degree at Cleary. After that she will land in California, Florida, Italy or 渕aybe not land at all, she laughs. 淚 will go where life leads me, with confidence, excitement and a degree from Cleary, which gives me limitless opportunities in my career, she finds.

Thanks to the encouragement of her sister who was the first sibling to venture from Brazil to the states and pursue her education at Cleary, Jaque secured a scholarship and a new life at the same university.

During her three years at Cleary, Jaque has been impressed with its growth and expansion. 淢ore international students are choosing Cleary, the school built a new soccer field, a marketing internship program was started, and the faculty listens to us and our ideas, Jaque announces with excitement.

淚 went to the associate dean of students and suggested we have a dance here on campus. He said 榶es, and encouraged me to take charge of the event with his 100 percent support.

The Cougar Dance took place in the spring and more than 130 people attended. 淚t was a great success, and everyone had a good time, Jaque says proudly. 淚 learned so much from this experience. I never organized an event before, and I had to learn the discipline of organization and planning. Organization is a huge part of what I will need in my career, and Cleary gave me that opportunity. It showed me that I can be a leader and I am a leader. It has shown me self-worth that I can do what I set out to do.

Jaque is quick to add how much support students receive from faculty. 淚 have one on one connections with the professors, which is unusual in other schools, she notes. 淚t is perfect.

Jaque also points out that she likes the diversity of the university, the small class sizes, the commitment and accessibility of the professors, the ease of communication among faculty, the beauty of the campus, the close proximity from her home, the opportunity to play soccer and meet new friends, but most importantly, the immense opportunities Cleary offers for students in their career.

She finds the Career Development Center especially beneficial. 淭hey found me my first job ever at a dress shop about two minutes from the school. And then they got me an internship with the Cleary president! Now I檓 an intern in the Marketing department, and Jaque can pursue one of her passions photography. She serves as one of the university photographers.

淚f you work hard, there will be a job waiting for you, she says with confidence. 淐leary will make a difference in your life.

And she loves playing soccer. 淚 love the sport, I love the friends I am making, and I love the energy of the game. The soccer team feels like my family. Cleary feels like home, like family, she announces. 淚檝e made a lot of lifelong friends here, and I want to keep welcoming new students to Cleary.

And the students know Jaque well. She and three other Brazilian students at Cleary rent a home close to campus, and they welcome students to stop by for a barbecue or just to relax and unwind. The talk on campus is 渓et go to the Brazilians house, she laughs. 淚t a great place to bring people together.

When asked what the Cleary Mind means to her, Jaque is quick to say, 渙pportunities, positivity, confidence, not doubting yourself. It how you apply those concepts to yourself, your career goals, and your aspirations in life, she finds.

淐leary has helped me discover myself and what I want to do, what my potentials are. I am still discovering, and I am going to keep discovering every day. Cleary will be with me the whole way! I love it!

Cleary also offers a $10,000 DECA scholarship ($2,500 a year) each year to one student who has met the same criteria as the $4,000 scholarship and has held a state officer position or has advanced to a national or international competition.

淎t Cleary, we strive to offer our students every opportunity to succeed at the highest level by providing them with the resources to develop strong leadership skills as they pursue their career and life goals, reports Jeremy Walker, vice president of Enrollment Management at 天美麻豆.

This was evidenced at the international DECA Career Development awards competition held last month, the first competition in which Cleary DECA students participated. They brought home three grand awards, and five students were named finalists.

Undergraduate students Libby Cook and Chelsea Hendra received 淭op 10 in Business-to-Business Marketing honors the only award recipients from Michigan, and Michael Lloyd captured third place in Entrepreneurship Operations one of only two award winners from the state.

Cleary established its DECA program one year ago with 14 students and expects that number to grow rapidly.

The DECA scholarship is one of several scholarship opportunities offered at Cleary. Others include the following:

天美麻豆 celebrated De-Stress Fest at a time most needed for its students. During final exam week, the university hosted activities all week long to help students improve their concentration and decrease their anxiety so they could manage their stress effectively and do well on their final exams.

De-Stress Fest featured activities each day that included therapy dog visits, massages, stress balls, games, NBA playoff nights, a ping pong tournament, late night study snack breaks, casino night, plenty of food and music, and a hot wings eating contest. All students were encouraged to take a study break and join the festivities.

According to Matt Oliver, associate dean of students at 天美麻豆, 渟tudent stress levels intensify during this time of year, and our goal is to help our students not only manage their workload but also make sure they are not overwhelmed. Having a few diversions during their study hours seems to have a calming effect on students and allows them to concentrate more effectively and ultimately do better on their finals, he finds.

淲e recommend our students step away from their studies for some fresh air or a change of scenery. We find De-Stress Fest is producing the results we hoped for. Students are taking some time to unwind and relax.

According to national studies, students report that stressing about exams negatively affects their mindset and their test results. They are worried about failing and its impact on their future. As a result, many isolate themselves, neglect their social life and focus exclusively on their studies, which only intensifies their stress.

淭hey are not taking any time to relax and unwind. Their brains are on overload, which is completely counterproductive, Oliver finds.

淏alance is key, Oliver continues. 淥f course, doing well on exams should be a top priority for students, but they also need to give their brain a break. Socializing has shown to be the best way to ease stress and anxiety, and clear their mind for a short time, which allows them to refocus and re-energize.

Pictured, from left: 天美麻豆 students, Alexandria Zimmerman, Anna Clark, Libby Cook, Michael Lloyd, Chelsea Hendra, Kara Donaldson, Juliana Pachon and Ben Hibbard.

淭his year DECA theme was 楳aximize Your Momentum, and our students proudly demonstrated that theme through their work and presentations, announces Kelly Genei, associate professor at 天美麻豆 who oversees the DECA program. 淭he Cleary Mind Initiative truly was what gave our students the leading edge in this competition, Genei adds. 淭his was the university first time competing, and I am so proud that five students were named finalists.

淭he entire group of DECA members are exceptional students, Genei points out. 淒ECA requires not only advanced knowledge of the field in which the students are participating, but also offers important soft skills such as leadership, teamwork, communication and interpersonal skills. This was the first year in DECA for Libby, Chelsea and Michael, and to make it this far is an incredible achievement!

To compete, students were given a case study in their chosen category. They have approximately one hour to present their plan and strategy to a judge who evaluates the plan based on certain performance indicators such as knowledge relevant to the case study, problem solving skills, communication skills, creativity and overall professionalism.

DECA prepares college and high school emerging leaders and entrepreneurs throughout the world for careers in marketing, finance, hospitality and management. Its collegiate competitive events program allows students to test their experience, skills and knowledge while representing their university. They compete for top international honors in one of 25 different categories. Business and industrial leaders serve as judges for the competition.

Cleary established its DECA program one year ago. It is comprised of 14 members and 渨e are very excited to see it growing so rapidly and with such great achievements in less than a year, Genei continues. 淭he DECA competitive categories fit perfectly with the concentrations offered at Cleary, and their focus on problem solving, communication and leadership skills are exactly what we try to develop with the Cleary Mind.

The Cleary Mind is comprised of these eight key elements: critical thinking, problem solving, creative thinking, communications, persuasion, entrepreneurship, leadership and ethics.

The Importance of Gratitude in School and At Work /gratitude-in-school-and-at-work/ Fri, 05 Nov 2021 12:01:50 +0000 https://cleary1.wpengine.com/?p=20662 November is a month when we often focus on gratitude, and at 天美麻豆, we believe that an attitude of gratitude helps […]

]]>

November is a month when we often focus on gratitude, and at 天美麻豆, we believe that an attitude of gratitude helps students, staff and faculty succeed. It also positions our students to graduate with a positive perspective, which makes them excellent candidates for companies looking to hire good candidates.

Studies show that when you create a workplace culture centered on gratitude, employees feel greater job satisfaction and focus on what they appreciate about their workplace, rather than what they dislike.

This dovetails with a growing desire for purpose and meaning at work, as well as millennial and Gen-Z workers looking for companies that offer a sense of belonging beyond just completing tasks and collecting a paycheck. This is an organizational and psychological shift that is affecting workplaces, employers and employees across America and perhaps, worldwide.

The key to creating a culture focused on gratitude is seeing the human side of your employees, showing appreciating for work well done, generating a sense of respect, mutual benefit and community within a workplace, and setting up systems that empower employees to develop their skills and reach their fullest potential. When your employer believes in you, you can more easily believe in yourself and stick around!

Good workplace culture is something we teach our students to look for when . Often, it hard to discern in an interview, but when you have the opportunity to chat with employees, it easier to ask how often they檙e recognized for their work, how appreciated they feel and how happy they are at work.

gratitude

Also, it easy to sense the energy of a place. While it can be hard in this time of virtual interviews to assess the workplace aura, morale, engagement and energy directly affect performance, productivity and retention.

i am grateful

Some good questions to ask to determine workplace culture:

  • How long does the average employee stay with the company?
  • How soon should I anticipate an opportunity for promotion or advancement?
  • Is there upward motion for the position I am interested in?
  • How will you help me grow, expand and develop my skills?

If every employee is relatively new, run!! Great workplaces keep people a long time.

The 2019 Global Happiness and Well-Being Policy Report issued by the revealed that on average, when employees feel taken care of, appreciated and recognized, productivity swells by at least 10 percent.

Experiencing gratitude shifts the focus from what we don檛 have to what we do. Appreciating the good in our lives and work helps us to expand the gratitude out to recognize the abundance in our lives. After a decade of research, Dr. Robert Emmons, the world leading scientific expert on gratitude, discovered that people who feel gratitude regularly are happier, healthier and have better relationships.

This month, look for opportunities to be grateful. Share appreciation for others. Write thank you notes. Give compliments. Chances are good that not only will you feel happier about your life, your work will reap the benefits of this perspective.

Since January, has been hard at work building a new Esports program here at 天美麻豆 and recruiting students from around the world.

This fall, the program launched with great success, as students have already competed both within league and outside it in Valorant, Call of Duty Cold War, Hearthstone and Rocket League, Super Smash Brothers Ultimate, Overwatch and League of Legends.

Coach Ericksen has created and built programs before, though at the junior college level. Doing so at a four-year university is an even bigger proposition, he says, and one that he has embraced with enthusiasm.

esports in full swing

淟ooking at this from a full-time perspective enables me to be more mindful in engaging the community, he says. Ericksen has plans to launch youth camps and engage the community in a variety of ways to expand Cleary presence in Livingston County and beyond.

A former soccer player and soccer coach, Ericksen is himself a celebrated and accomplished Esports athlete, among the top 1% of players nationwide in League of Legends and Hearthstone.

淚檝e always been into video games, says Ericksen, who played on the A team for Chicago through . He was the head Esports coach at Waubonsee Community College in Sugar Grove, Illinois before coming to Cleary.

Due to the pandemic, he spent his first five months working remotely and commuting to Howell from Illinois, to strategize with Cleary and IT Director , laying the groundwork for the program. All the while, he was recruiting players virtually.

Recently, Ericksen led an effort to build a dedicated Esports arena in Cleary Commons. He has welcomed 23 student-athletes to campus and some have even competed this month already.

The Cleary Esports team roster includes the following student-athletes:

  • Logan Jarema from Qilo, Mich., playing Call of Duty Black Ops Cold War (V)
  • Wyatt Emmons from Mayville, Mich., playing Call of Duty Black Ops Cold War (V)
  • Collin Paul from Randolph, Wis., playing Call of Duty Black Ops Cold War (V)
  • Ryan Drake-Burmania from Randolph, Wis., playing Call of Duty Black Ops Cold War (V)
  • Griffin Andrews from Linden, Mich., playing Call of Duty Black Ops Cold War (V)
  • Nathan Reiber from Howell, Mich., playing Rocket League (V)
  • Ethan Fillmore from Stockbridge, Mich., playing Rocket League (V)
  • Kyle Thompson from Highland, Mich., playing Rocket League (V)
  • Trever Hall from Vicksburg, Mich., playing Rocket League (JV)
  • Aaron Dyke from Harrison Township, Mich., playing Rocket League (JV)
  • Griffin Bryan from Westland, Mich., playing Rocket League (JV)
  • Hunter Muzo playing Rocket League (JV)
  • Alexander Fedewa from Dimondale, Mich., playing Overwatch
  • Quinlan Jordan from Holly, Mich., playing Overwatch
  • Joey DiBartolo from Elgin, Ill., playing Overwatch/Valorant (V)
  • Samantha Mason from Sterling Heights, Mich., playing Valorant (V)
  • Alexander Lewis from Applegate, Mich., playing Valorant (V)
  • Pichit Charoenpanich from Las Vegas, playing Valorant (V)
  • Thomas McDonald from Macomb, Mich., playing Valorant (V)
  • Nigel Watson from St. Charles, Mo., playing Super Smash Bros. Ultimate (V)
  • Henry Bonette from Palm Desert, Calif., playing Super Smash Bros. Ultimate (V)
  • Andrius Jurenas from Mississauga, Ontario, Canada, playing Hearthstone/League of Legends
  • Connor Wisniewski from Brighton Township, Mich., playing League of Legends

淭here definitely going to be some growing pains, but we have a really positive group of individuals who are gelling well, Ericksen says. 淥ur Rocket League team played together for three months before arriving to campus. They were emphatic about getting to know each other and started working on things as soon as they were signed.

Growing up in Sydney, Australia, Chelsea Hendra had no idea her soccer skills would take her around the world to pursue at 天美麻豆

淚 love playing , says Chelsea, lamenting that Australian universities don檛 offer athletic incentives to attend college like American universities do. That was her main motivation for traveling to another locale to continue her education.

淚 wanted to be able to expand on my skills while also getting a degree, she says. And she thrilled that the best opportunity was at 天美麻豆.

淚 liked that it is a smaller school because I wanted it to feel like a community, especially being so far away from home, Chelsea explains. 淚 wanted to have that feeling of being able to know a lot of the students and teachers and staff. It such a supportive environment, and really inclusive.

Majoring in , Chelsea has long wanted to support youth and envisions that her degree will likely take her to nonprofit management or a company with a mission to advance opportunities for young people. She wants to put her business degree to working 渕aking an impact.

Living in the and working as an RA, Chelsea is embedded in the day-to-day Cleary campus culture. She alternates between duties at the res hall and working in the Cleary Commons cafeteria, and of course, attending classes. By 6 p.m., it time for two and a half hours of soccer training, and after that, it downtime when she can hang out with fellow students and other RAs.

淲e make our own fun, she says of the on-campus community. A recent favorite activity is playing FIFA on the PlayStation, but board games, socializing, and hanging out while doing homework are close seconds. Of course, there late-night noshing and fierce games of ping pong, too.

淚t can be the most simple activity, but we檒l turn it into something fun, Chelsea says.

Admittedly, this year is not a typical year on campus, Chelsea notes. The COVID-19 pandemic has up-ended the 渘ormal flow of campus life but it hasn檛 prevented Chelsea or her peers from having fun and feeling connected on campus.

She still dedicated to spending time with friends, deepening relationships that began last year, and getting to know this year instructors by 減opping into their offices for a chat.

Chelsea also works closely with , who has been a guiding force for Chelsea involvement in , the business fraternity on campus.

As president of the fraternity this semester, Chelsea works closely with Lisa, making plans and creating activities. 淪he a big support for me, Chelsea says.

淎thletics is a really big part of being a Cleary student, she says. 淎 majority of the students here are student-athletes. The biggest selling points for me are that it a smaller campus, the education is good, and the pricing is right. Overall, it just a very close community and everyone has your back.

As an international student so far from home, with no ability to travel back for a visit due to the pandemic, Chelsea is glad she at a place where she has developed a family away from home. It can be lonely to be so far away, she says, but everyone at the school is supportive. And that is the Cleary difference.

As the rapid spread of COVID-19 forced college and universities to shift quickly to , most higher ed students across the country packed up and moved home earlier than they had planned.听听

That happened on our campus, too, but a handful of students stayed in halls. In this blog we share the stories of the six students who remained on campus as their classmates cleared out and went home.听

Ashley Hoskins, a rising senior majoring in and minoring in and management, felt it would be easier to stay on campus since she and her roommate, Maya Williams, were moving into an apartment just a month after the shutdowns began.听

Maya Williams and Ashley Hoskins

A bowler on the who hails from Mason, Michigan, Ashley says, 淚t was very simple to move our stuff down the road, rather than all the way back home an hour away and then move it all back. We had everything we needed in the dorms; classes would move online.

The biggest challenge, she says, 渨as not being able to see my family as much I檇 like to.

Distance has been hard for so many during this time, but the six Cleary students who stayed on campus created an intimate cohort, becoming even closer than they were before during this time, they says.

淚t brought us closer together, Ashley says.  淚t seemed like a big family, even though we had separate rooms on different floors.

When the closed, Cleary made sure to provide funding so students could still buy groceries or order food. 淭hey went above and beyond during the last few weeks, says Ashley.听淐leary even helped us stock our fridge in our听new听apartment.澨

Her roommate, Maya Williams, was equally pleased with the arrangement. A player who is also a rising senior studying marketing, Maya says Cleary ease at online and on-ground learning made it easy for students to adapt to only-online during this time.

淐leary was able to adapt well to that because all of our assignments are usually turned in online, Maya says.

Staying Connected

She liked living on campus during the pandemic 渂ecause we were able to keep the mood up. We played board games. Cleary staff made sure we were all still living well. None of us went without anything.

Both Maya and Ashley continued in their jobs outside of school; Maya hails from Lowell, Michigan, which is an hour and a half drive away. She couldn檛 justify moving home temporarily before having to move back to fill the apartment with Ashley.

Logan Jarema

Logan听Jarema听just finished his freshman year at Cleary the last two months of which he finished as part of the small cohort who stayed on campus. He working toward听a bachelor听degree听in with a minor in project management. After that, the Clio, Michigan native wants to obtain his MBA.听

淚 had to stay because at my house, I don檛 have internet; there is no provider is available in my area – we can檛 even get the school-funded one, Logan says. 淚 stayed on campus so I could do all my schoolwork.

He liked the intimate setting. 淚t was nice. It kind of brought a homey vibe., Logan says. 淲e all got along and did different activities together like board games and threw a football around. I檓 a homebody, so it didn檛 bother me to be alone that much.

Logan lauds Cleary for the way they provided for the students. 淲e got fed from Clancy, which was as awesome as having a home-cooked meal. And then once we went into the full lockdown, they did their best to provide for us to get food from other places.

Jacob Raffensperger was also happy with how Cleary supported the students who remained on campus.

Also finishing his freshman year, Jacob is studying business marketing. He graduated from Howell High School and hails from Durand, Michigan. He remained on campus to have access to WiFi.

淚t was pretty nice, says Jacob. 淲e got closer, more than normal. Cleary offered extra activities to keep us from being bored.

Last Man Standing

Finding it impossible to travel out of the country, James Bell, a 2020 Cleary graduate from Warfield, England, is the last remaining student on campus. But he in great spirits about staying at Cleary and appreciative of all the attention and care he receiving.

淓veryone at Cleary has been incredible to me, James says. 淓veryone, and I mean everyone, has reached out, offered support, said, 業f you need anything, let me know. I檝e felt so valued, I檝e felt so cared for.

James Bell

When he turned 22 recently, Cleary staff members reached out to say happy birthday including the president, provost, and folks in the business office, James says.

It been interesting to hear from his family in England how they檙e handling the pandemic compared with what is unfolding here in America, James notes. His brother is a police officer, and his brother girlfriend is an NHS (National Health Service) worker, so he hearing an earful of updates.

淚n England, it a unified effort, with a big emphasis on testing, James relays. 淭here also a government furlong scheme to pay 80 percent of a person salary if their company can檛 pay them. Every week they do a clap for essential workers, an incredible show of unity. Kids put pictures of rainbows in windows to make people happy. My Nan, who is 86, says it just like World War II in Britain, where everyone comes together to fight something.

While James family was supposed to come to Michigan for graduation and his birthday after saving for a year to afford the journey, they obviously could not travel due to the pandemic.

淚 turned 22 in lockdown with no one really here. The housing manager had a little party for me, but it wasn檛 quite the same as being with my family, says James, who would love to go home when he can, 渢o give everyone a hug especially my Nan.

Pleased with Cleary

Among other reasons, James came to听Cleary听because of its size. On his very first day on campus, he was thrilled that the and leaders stopped their work to welcome him.听

淭hat made me feel really valued, says James, who has dreams of being the next , starting lots of companies. 淚t a really inviting atmosphere, which certainly extended into this unprecedented situation.

The feeling of being valued and known has continued as he stayed on campus.听When there were more students living听there, James says, he and a few others, along with Housing听Manager听Zak Payne went outside every day to play sports.听听

Zak Payne

淚 didn檛 know how to play baseball, and we hit a few baseballs, says James, who came to Cleary at first on a soccer scholarship. 淭hey taught me how to throw an American football, and I showed them how to play soccer. It been fun.

While he remains on campus, James is pleased to continue to connect with Zak. 淚 have a good relationship with him; being in quarantine together is pretty cool.

And he not alone in this sentiment. All the students who stayed on campus during the pandemic say Zak was an amazing support providing pizza, spearheading games and activities, and hosting a cookout, where they gathered around a fire and talked for hours.

Zak made it easier to stay, the students say. Like so many Cleary leaders, they claim 渉e an understanding person who truly cares about the students.

Which is what we call the Cleary difference.
