The holiday season at the end of the calendar year is a time when people often take stock, review and evaluate the year that is ending, and look to the future to determine what comes next.

This month brings so many holidays and observances, from to Thanksgiving to and Cyber Monday and of course, .

As a business university bestowing and , 天美麻豆 focuses on the human side of business and how all business boils down to an interaction between humans.

What more, we would not be thriving and growing if it were not for the support of small businesses throughout the region. We rely on support, input and leadership from our , who are often entrepreneurs, business owners and business leaders, and also the generous people who sponsor our events and initiatives.

The defines a these businesses as聽 firms which have fewer than 500 employees. In comparison, the European Union assigns the term to any business that has fewer than 50 employees.

In America, 99.7 percent of all businesses fall into that classification!! That means the majority of jobs come from small businesses. In fact, since the year 2000, 65.1 percent of net new job creation has come from small businesses across this country.

What more, small businesses are considered incubators for innovation and employment growth, playing a vital role in the economy welfare.

Small may be relative, but it can be powerful. The smaller a business, the more every person efforts and input counts! The smaller a business, the more nimble and impactful it can often be. Simply put, the best run organizations place a high priority on the human side of business.

This Small Business Saturday (which takes place on November 27th this year), look for businesses that make a difference in your community. Patronize businesses led by passion and relationship. Support efforts to build your local economy through hard work, empathy and human connection. After all, all business is local, and the value of our relationships is what moves us forward.

The Importance of Gratitude in School and At Work /gratitude-in-school-and-at-work/ Fri, 05 Nov 2021 12:01:50 +0000 https://cleary1.wpengine.com/?p=20662 November is a month when we often focus on gratitude, and at 天美麻豆, we believe that an attitude of gratitude helps […]

November is a month when we often focus on gratitude, and at 天美麻豆, we believe that an attitude of gratitude helps students, staff and faculty succeed. It also positions our students to graduate with a positive perspective, which makes them excellent candidates for companies looking to hire good candidates.

Studies show that when you create a workplace culture centered on gratitude, employees feel greater job satisfaction and focus on what they appreciate about their workplace, rather than what they dislike.

This dovetails with a growing desire for purpose and meaning at work, as well as millennial and Gen-Z workers looking for companies that offer a sense of belonging beyond just completing tasks and collecting a paycheck. This is an organizational and psychological shift that is affecting workplaces, employers and employees across America and perhaps, worldwide.

The key to creating a culture focused on gratitude is seeing the human side of your employees, showing appreciating for work well done, generating a sense of respect, mutual benefit and community within a workplace, and setting up systems that empower employees to develop their skills and reach their fullest potential. When your employer believes in you, you can more easily believe in yourself and stick around!

Good workplace culture is something we teach our students to look for when . Often, it hard to discern in an interview, but when you have the opportunity to chat with employees, it easier to ask how often they檙e recognized for their work, how appreciated they feel and how happy they are at work.

gratitude

Also, it easy to sense the energy of a place. While it can be hard in this time of virtual interviews to assess the workplace aura, morale, engagement and energy directly affect performance, productivity and retention.

i am grateful

Some good questions to ask to determine workplace culture:

  • How long does the average employee stay with the company?
  • How soon should I anticipate an opportunity for promotion or advancement?
  • Is there upward motion for the position I am interested in?
  • How will you help me grow, expand and develop my skills?

If every employee is relatively new, run!! Great workplaces keep people a long time.

The 2019 Global Happiness and Well-Being Policy Report issued by the revealed that on average, when employees feel taken care of, appreciated and recognized, productivity swells by at least 10 percent.

Experiencing gratitude shifts the focus from what we don檛 have to what we do. Appreciating the good in our lives and work helps us to expand the gratitude out to recognize the abundance in our lives. After a decade of research, Dr. Robert Emmons, the world leading scientific expert on gratitude, discovered that people who feel gratitude regularly are happier, healthier and have better relationships.

This month, look for opportunities to be grateful. Share appreciation for others. Write thank you notes. Give compliments. Chances are good that not only will you feel happier about your life, your work will reap the benefits of this perspective.

Culture, that elusive thing which defines and shapes a work experience and which can influence high employee turnover or retention. Workplace culture is a tough thing to articulate or describe, but it ever-present and all-important, which is why we try to teach this important constant in , both undergraduate and , for all business degrees.

First, what is ?

It a general feeling or atmosphere that transmits shared understanding of the organization goals and objectives. It that certain something that creates employee satisfaction and loyalty. Branding is a part of culture, but so are rituals, reviews from former employees, values and onboarding experiences.

Employees learn culture through team meetings, team-building programs and events, and how higher-ups respond when you speak up or offer ideas. Showing appreciation, gifting company merchandise, and establishing keen role models in leadership positions are some ways to share corporate culture.

Since 天美麻豆 focuses expressly on business for both and graduate degrees, we teach students about the importance of evaluating culture before choosing a future workplace. By empowering students to realize that the job hunt is not just about finding an employer to make you an offer, but also an exercise in deciding where you want to work, we teach students that they have a say in their career.

Culture is a crucial element to understand.

Often people new to the work force feel like they don檛 have many options and so they accept a position that may not be a real fit. Or, perhaps they檝e ignored rumors of ill treatment or unhealthy work environments just to get a job.

We want Cleary students to know that . They have choice and agency when job-searching. How can they discern the culture when they are interviewing? Here are a few tips for trying to figure it out:

  1. How do people behave? Whether you檙e interviewing online or in-person, look around and notice whether people are smiling and giving off good energy, or downcast and quiet.
  2. Ask about beliefs and values, the team ethos, the principles behind the brand. Listen carefully to the answers and feel free to ask follow-up questions. An organization with good culture can respond easily and effortlessly. Interviewers at an organization that lacks values and shared beliefs will stumble to respond.
  3. Ask how long the typical employee stays with the company. Ask about advancement opportunities and building a career there rather than just getting a job.
  4. Ask about the top leaders and their career stories. Look for ways that those people brought others up behind and with them.
  5. Ask about team-building opportunities, staff retreats and professional development opportunities. Where there is good culture, these things abound.
  6. Ask how the company measures success. Business strategy, structure and outcomes should align with culture.

. That a lot of time devoted to an endeavor which, if you don檛 love what you檙e doing, can feel like drudgery.

In honor of Valentine Day, we want to share how helps students, graduates, and find work they love.聽

We help our students find positions, internships, and opportunities. We help students and alumni with resumes and resume revisions. Anything that supports , we are here to help, says Amy Denton, Director of Career Development at 天美麻豆.

We try to encourage students to tie their passion into a profession. Admittedly, that easy for some people and harder for others.

You don檛 necessarily have to love love love your job, but you sure as heck should like it an awful lot, Denton says. We try to tell students to avoid choosing a profession just because it sounds glamorous or they think they檒l get rich. It so important to have drive and motivation to wake up every morning and eagerly go to work. It has to speak to your soul.

This process of career development begins freshman year at Cleary, with a mandatory three-semester course, , or Career Development, which is taught online. In this course, students explore and discover their strengths, do personality assessments, and try to identify what they are suited for early on, Denton explains.

Many Cleary students come in with majors already declared, but even if they don檛, we try to foster those fundamentals with all students as early as possible.

One assignment helps students look at their leadership strengths. Do they build influence? Think strategically? Excel at building relationships? Once they know these specific traits, they can parlay them into career options.

For example, a person who excels at relationships, builds harmony and makes connections might be ideally suited for sales, marketing or consulting professions.

Even when a student thinks they know their future career path, that may change as they immerse in classes and self-study. So much of the college experience involves trying things on and seeing what fits. A great internship can help mold a career decision in either direction! It can be a win, where the student feels like he in his sweet spot and that internship leads to a career. Or it can be a learning experience where the student identifies that this is definitely not the career path she wants.

When thinking about your future career path, consider these defining tips:

  1. Always . If you檙e considering an internship or job, do your research, Denton says. Ask people you know who already work there for some feedback. If you don檛 know anyone, investigate online at or by simply searching for the company. Do your homework. Don檛 settle for the first thing that comes your way. Make sure the company culture where you檙e going to be working 40 hours a week aligns with what you檙e looking for.
  2. Don檛 choose a profession because it sounds good. Being a neurosurgeon might be fascinating work and very lucrative, but it not a successful path for everyone. Do something that makes sense for you and your skills. Parlay attributes into a career path.
  3. Be realistic. Especially when it comes to internships, know that you檙e starting out at the bottom of the ladder, and that ok. You may not be fetching coffee (or you might!), but often you檙e also not going to get the most important tasks, Denton cautions. In an internship, especially, it should be a mutual learning experience. The employer should be fostering the growth of the student, and the student should soak up every last tidbit of information. There are going to be speed bumps here and there; and there should be. Not every day is butterflies and unicorns. But that ok. That is absolutely realistic and healthy.
  4. It never too late. While some students know from a young age what career path they want to pursue, many do not. Investigate, do assessments, learn as much as you can about career exploration and what particular professions entail. A job as a private investigator would not be a good choice if you don檛 want to sit in a car all day.
  5. Network. Every relationship is useful and helpful! You never know where a relationship can take you or where you can help someone else. Use your resources. Denton often hears students say, I don檛 really know anybody. That not true! Tap into friends parents, your parents, your parents friends, your dentist, anybody. Ask questions, ask for introductions, and be open to listening and learning. We need to always be networking, even starting in high school! Cleary has professional organizations on campus make use of them once you enroll! Denton says, there is truth to the adage it not what you know; it who you know. There needs to be a nice balance between the two.

By Emily Barnes

In this, the first blog on the 天美麻豆 website, it important to start at the core of who we are and what we aim to do as a four-year business university. Simply, we want our graduates to be complete people.

A complete person is one who not only understands how the world works and how a particular industry works, but is an integral part of the functions. A complete person is a change agent who creatively and critically approaches situations with an intention of making the world, their business, their home, better.

This person is ethical, driven, knowledgeable. This type of person is what employers are in need of, and it is this type of person that 天美麻豆 strives to graduate.

Research has revealed that business students, nationwide, were not exhibiting the qualities that employers desire. That realization drove the creation of , the foundation of The Business Arts Curriculum at 天美麻豆.

Recently, I was in a coffee shop in sharing my thoughts about our curriculum and our pedagogical approach to teaching and empowering university students. A woman from a nearby table came over to us. She apologized for eavesdropping, and shared the story of her son who had gone through a program that allowed him to think critically, make an impact and speak up. He is now a community activist and life coach.

天美麻豆 students

The woman thanked us for the work that we do through this innovative and thoughtful curriculum. She said, 淭his is what we need to develop in future generations.

A complete person, like the kind we seek to shape, doesn檛 have to be an anomaly. It can be every one of our graduates.

罢丑补迟&苍产蝉辫;The Cleary Mind.

We are moving into the second year of this new, original approach to university education. We focus on philosophy every semester, so students understand how to think objectively, critically and ethically. We want them to be who they are, and representing 天美麻豆, everywhere they go  whether that is a job, a business endeavor, or community involvement.

Cleary students must be able to comprehend information on a far deeper level than they ever before. 天美麻豆 doesn檛 simply seek to just educate students. We help students develop identity, confidence, and voice so they not only 榞et a job but make a real difference as they build meaningful lives.

The Cleary Mind, as delivered through The Business Arts curriculum, trains young minds to be adaptable, to solve problems, to think critically, to lead, to communicate well. These are what we consider to be transferrable skills.

A decade ago, transferrable skills were typing and knowing certain software. But the term today means knowing how to do things that apply everywhere.

The transferrable skills that will take us into an unknown future are competency, social efficacy, teamwork, communication, flexibility, and leadership.

The four years students spend at Cleary are crucial. It takes that long to repeat, repeat, repeat lessons, and take them into your being. We build skills through practice, repetition, failure, and another try.

Employers say our graduates are more prepared for the workforce than peers from other institutions. We prepare students to contribute and prevail in an innovative, constantly changing workforce.

Our curriculum focuses on business, philosophy and literacy/logic. This trifecta teaches students to think. That is critical to becoming a leader.

Cleary university students in classroom

Cleary students learn to question, to understand reason and logic, to argue well. One education is the most transformational time of life. Students have left the assumptive nest where they took for granted that what others said was gospel and now, they must develop a sense of who they are in the world, separate from the adults who told them what to do and how to do it.

The Cleary Mind Attributes

Our  aims to create a versatile business school graduate who can confidently contribute to the world. We seek to instill in our students these eight attributes:

  1. Critical Thinking
  2. Creative Thinking
  3. Problem Solving
  4. Communications
  5. Persuasion
  6. Entrepreneurship
  7. Leadership
  8. Ethics

You cannot become a leader without these profound traits. And you can檛 be a leader until you understand your Self.

Every good leader on the planet possesses self-efficacy. That is, a strong sense of identity that the majority of employers say their workplaces lack.

What Inspired The Cleary Mind ?

Business, Philosophy, Literacy

This unique pedagogical approach grew out of the needs of employers and the needs of society. We must create knowledgeable citizens and informed individuals who can contribute to a constantly changing economy.

Survey after survey reveals that employers want 渂usiness-ready skills not the specific job they檙e hiring for. They want people who come ready to contribute, to learn, to create.

They are looking for leadership, communication, and team-building skills – skills that a whole generation of people are lacking.

Our theories of development shepherd students through their university years with an eye toward helping them form identity. They檙e looking for beliefs. They are open to ideas. And because of that inquisitive open nature, combined with the encouraged questioning and immersive study of our approach to business education, they are destined to become contributors.
