International student, Jaque Valota, is captain of the 天美麻豆 soccer team, she works as a marketing intern at the university, she single handedly organized and hosted the first ever 減rom night at the school, and she looks to her future with confidence and certainty for success.

She will graduate in December with her bachelor degree and plans to continue her studies and obtain a master degree at Cleary. After that she will land in California, Florida, Italy or 渕aybe not land at all, she laughs. 淚 will go where life leads me, with confidence, excitement and a degree from Cleary, which gives me limitless opportunities in my career, she finds.

Thanks to the encouragement of her sister who was the first sibling to venture from Brazil to the states and pursue her education at Cleary, Jaque secured a scholarship and a new life at the same university.

During her three years at Cleary, Jaque has been impressed with its growth and expansion. 淢ore international students are choosing Cleary, the school built a new soccer field, a marketing internship program was started, and the faculty listens to us and our ideas, Jaque announces with excitement.

淚 went to the associate dean of students and suggested we have a dance here on campus. He said 榶es, and encouraged me to take charge of the event with his 100 percent support.

The Cougar Dance took place in the spring and more than 130 people attended. 淚t was a great success, and everyone had a good time, Jaque says proudly. 淚 learned so much from this experience. I never organized an event before, and I had to learn the discipline of organization and planning. Organization is a huge part of what I will need in my career, and Cleary gave me that opportunity. It showed me that I can be a leader and I am a leader. It has shown me self-worth that I can do what I set out to do.

Jaque is quick to add how much support students receive from faculty. 淚 have one on one connections with the professors, which is unusual in other schools, she notes. 淚t is perfect.

Jaque also points out that she likes the diversity of the university, the small class sizes, the commitment and accessibility of the professors, the ease of communication among faculty, the beauty of the campus, the close proximity from her home, the opportunity to play soccer and meet new friends, but most importantly, the immense opportunities Cleary offers for students in their career.

She finds the Career Development Center especially beneficial. 淭hey found me my first job ever at a dress shop about two minutes from the school. And then they got me an internship with the Cleary president! Now I檓 an intern in the Marketing department, and Jaque can pursue one of her passions photography. She serves as one of the university photographers.

淚f you work hard, there will be a job waiting for you, she says with confidence. 淐leary will make a difference in your life.

And she loves playing soccer. 淚 love the sport, I love the friends I am making, and I love the energy of the game. The soccer team feels like my family. Cleary feels like home, like family, she announces. 淚檝e made a lot of lifelong friends here, and I want to keep welcoming new students to Cleary.

And the students know Jaque well. She and three other Brazilian students at Cleary rent a home close to campus, and they welcome students to stop by for a barbecue or just to relax and unwind. The talk on campus is 渓et go to the Brazilians house, she laughs. 淚t a great place to bring people together.

When asked what the Cleary Mind means to her, Jaque is quick to say, 渙pportunities, positivity, confidence, not doubting yourself. It how you apply those concepts to yourself, your career goals, and your aspirations in life, she finds.

淐leary has helped me discover myself and what I want to do, what my potentials are. I am still discovering, and I am going to keep discovering every day. Cleary will be with me the whole way! I love it!

Since January, has been hard at work building a new Esports program here at 天美麻豆 and recruiting students from around the world.

This fall, the program launched with great success, as students have already competed both within league and outside it in Valorant, Call of Duty Cold War, Hearthstone and Rocket League, Super Smash Brothers Ultimate, Overwatch and League of Legends.

Coach Ericksen has created and built programs before, though at the junior college level. Doing so at a four-year university is an even bigger proposition, he says, and one that he has embraced with enthusiasm.

淟ooking at this from a full-time perspective enables me to be more mindful in engaging the community, he says. Ericksen has plans to launch youth camps and engage the community in a variety of ways to expand Cleary presence in Livingston County and beyond.

A former soccer player and soccer coach, Ericksen is himself a celebrated and accomplished Esports athlete, among the top 1% of players nationwide in League of Legends and Hearthstone.

淚檝e always been into video games, says Ericksen, who played on the A team for Chicago through . He was the head Esports coach at Waubonsee Community College in Sugar Grove, Illinois before coming to Cleary.

Due to the pandemic, he spent his first five months working remotely and commuting to Howell from Illinois, to strategize with Cleary and IT Director , laying the groundwork for the program. All the while, he was recruiting players virtually.

Recently, Ericksen led an effort to build a dedicated Esports arena in Cleary Commons. He has welcomed 23 student-athletes to campus and some have even competed this month already.

The Cleary Esports team roster includes the following student-athletes:

  • Logan Jarema from Qilo, Mich., playing Call of Duty Black Ops Cold War (V)
  • Wyatt Emmons from Mayville, Mich., playing Call of Duty Black Ops Cold War (V)
  • Collin Paul from Randolph, Wis., playing Call of Duty Black Ops Cold War (V)
  • Ryan Drake-Burmania from Randolph, Wis., playing Call of Duty Black Ops Cold War (V)
  • Griffin Andrews from Linden, Mich., playing Call of Duty Black Ops Cold War (V)
  • Nathan Reiber from Howell, Mich., playing Rocket League (V)
  • Ethan Fillmore from Stockbridge, Mich., playing Rocket League (V)
  • Kyle Thompson from Highland, Mich., playing Rocket League (V)
  • Trever Hall from Vicksburg, Mich., playing Rocket League (JV)
  • Aaron Dyke from Harrison Township, Mich., playing Rocket League (JV)
  • Griffin Bryan from Westland, Mich., playing Rocket League (JV)
  • Hunter Muzo playing Rocket League (JV)
  • Alexander Fedewa from Dimondale, Mich., playing Overwatch
  • Quinlan Jordan from Holly, Mich., playing Overwatch
  • Joey DiBartolo from Elgin, Ill., playing Overwatch/Valorant (V)
  • Samantha Mason from Sterling Heights, Mich., playing Valorant (V)
  • Alexander Lewis from Applegate, Mich., playing Valorant (V)
  • Pichit Charoenpanich from Las Vegas, playing Valorant (V)
  • Thomas McDonald from Macomb, Mich., playing Valorant (V)
  • Nigel Watson from St. Charles, Mo., playing Super Smash Bros. Ultimate (V)
  • Henry Bonette from Palm Desert, Calif., playing Super Smash Bros. Ultimate (V)
  • Andrius Jurenas from Mississauga, Ontario, Canada, playing Hearthstone/League of Legends
  • Connor Wisniewski from Brighton Township, Mich., playing League of Legends

淭here definitely going to be some growing pains, but we have a really positive group of individuals who are gelling well, Ericksen says. 淥ur Rocket League team played together for three months before arriving to campus. They were emphatic about getting to know each other and started working on things as soon as they were signed.

It no coincidence that a majority of our students are involved in athletics. That because the values they learn being a member of an athletic team translates well to careers in business.

Women's lacrosse team

The sports-business connection is vibrantly clear: learning to work with others, discipline, leadership, and determination are all attributes that are essential for business and entrepreneurship, and our student-athletes learn first learn this on the playing field.

Men's soccer

Overseeing 15 varsity sports and 275 student-athletes, I think about how our robust athletic offerings connect to the Cleary mindset. We talk about ethics, problem-solving, leadership and communication all essential values to participate in college athletics.

And yet, these are some of the attributes of .听听

Men's baseball

Hand in hand, academics and athletics inform and inspire one another. What we are trying to instill in the classroom at 天美麻豆 we also seek to instill on and off the field of play.

Women's softball

Entrepreneur  wrote about this sport-business connection in  Entrepreneur Magazine article. He shares  that show the connection between aerobic and strength training and better focus, memory, mental acuity and cognitive performance.

Women's soccer

He also draws a keen parallel between competitive athletes and successful business people:

  • Planning a race strategy, he says, is like planning a business strategy. Both require goal-setting, laser-sharp focus, training, resources, and metrics.
  • When you exercise daily, your focus at work is sharper.
  • Competitive athletes build a network of connections that stay with them throughout their careers. They help one another and make introductions which is key to building business.

In business, we work a lot on problem-solving and communication. We must be clear and focused on the field and in the classroom.  This leads to strong employees in the business field.

Men's hockey

We learn that leaders can make or break a team build them up or truly break them down. For both athletics and business to succeed, we need consummate leaders who work on cohesion, camaraderie and connection, and we have team players who want to work together for everyone greater good.

Employers are eager to meet Cleary students who have participated in one of our strong athletic programs because they seek that discipline and team mentality for their workplaces.

Women's dance team

TEDx speaker and author says great coaches can instill self-awareness and understanding in athletes. Both are needed in the professional world. He believes great leaders make every player feel invaluable and they rise to the occasion because of this ethos.

With our avid athletics department and innovative Business Arts curriculum, 天美麻豆 is the place where students become masters of the mind and innovators of the future.
